UPDATE: Salvage operations to recover Air Station Detroit helicopter completed

>I just wanted to provide everyone with a quick update on the Coast Guard’s recovery operations to salvage an Air Station Detroit HH-65C helicopter which crashed in Lake Huron April 20, 2010.

All three aviators were safely rescued by the crew of a Coast Guard Station Port Huron 41-foot utility boat immediately following the nighttime training incident.

Salvage divers and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay successfully recovered the airframe, which sank in approximately 50 feet of water, April 22, 2010. The wreckage was examined by mishap investigators April 23, 2010, prior to being loaded on a tractor trailer for transport to the Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center in Elizabeth City for further damage assesment and evaluation.

We are all thankful that our shipmates weren’t seriously injured in the incident. There was no pollution or evidence of leakage of any of the estimated 140 gallons of aviation-grade fuel aboard the helicopter.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
