The award recognizes Popiel as the Coast Guard civilian employee who best exemplifies the Coast Guard’s leadership philosophy, principles and core values.

“The inspired leadership demonstrated by Mr. Popiel dramatically underscores the value we place on people. His personal actions epitomize the core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty that we define as our organizational character,” said Adm. Thad W. Allen, Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard.

The award is named after the first commissioner of the U.S. Lighthouse Service, who exemplified inspirational leadership. He retired in 1935 after 45 continuous years as a civil servant. He rose from a clerk in the Coast and Geodetic Survey all the way to the commissioner of the Lighthouse Service in 1910.

BRAVO ZULU for a job well done, Jerry Popiel.
