From the Field: Sector Detroit Hosts FRA Memorial Day Ceremony

Sector Detroit personnel participated in the local Fleet Reserve Association’s Memorial Day service held at the Sector pier along the Detroit River. The Fleet Reserve Association is a Congressionally chartered, non-profit organization representing the interests of the Sea Service community before the U.S. Congress. The Association’s membership is comprised of current and former enlisted members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

The Naval Sea Cadets performed honor guard duties for the ceremony. Station Belle Isle took flowered wreaths out into the water, and Air Station Detroit conducted a ceremonial overflight. LCDR Maria AbuZeid Ruttig was the keynote speaker for an audience of over 60 attendees and talked about some of the Coast Guard’s fallen heroes. The Coastguardsmen highlighted in the speech were SM1 Douglas Munro, LT Jack Rittichier, MK1 Charles Sexton, and DC3 Nathan Bruckenthal.

After the ceremony the attendees were invited to cast flowers into the water to commemorate our men and women who have died in military service.
