Prospective recruits get center-court recognition

>On Nov. 10, 2010, Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District, administered the Oath of Enlistment to nearly two dozen prospective military members, representing each of the five armed services.

The event took place in front of thousands of spectators prior to a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. The crowd began to cheer as the future servicemembers were ushered onto the court, and as each raised his or her hand and pledged to support the Constitution, the audience erupted into raucous applause.

“It was nice to be on center court at a major sporting event and be recognized,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Ralph Courtney, a recruiter at Coast Guard Recruiting Office Cleveland. “It was really heartwarming to hear the audience applaud the prospective recruits after they took their Oath of Enlistment.”
