Cutter Buckthorn participates in Operation Fall Retrieve

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Buckthorn crews remove and replace aids-to-navigation during Operation Fall Retrieve, December 2010.

Operation Fall Retrieve commenced Oct. 14, 2010, with a goal of retrieving 1,264 navigational aids, which include lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons, and should be completed by Dec. 28, 2010. The aids, approximately half in the region, are taken out of service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and severe weather.
