As part of the Birdies for the Brave, the Bridgestone Invitational Golf Tournament hosted a military appreciation ceremony Aug. 6, 2011, to honor and show appreciation to the courageous men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

During the ceremony, Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Tom Forester, the 9th Coast Guard District Enlisted Person of the Quarter, was honored for his hard work and dedication while providing support in the 9th District Legal Office.

Birdies for the Brave is a military outreach initiative supported by the PGA Tour and numerous PGA Tour players.

The event was created by golfer Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy, to support troops injured during combat. For each birdie or eagle Phil makes throughout the season, a contribution of $100 for a birdie or $500 for an eagle is made to Homes for Our Troops and Special Operations Warrior Foundation.  Since the program’s inception, Birdies for the Brave has grown to include a variety of military outreach efforts: including Patriots’ Outpost military hospitality chalets; military celebrations held during PGA tournaments; letter-writing campaigns for the troops; the distribution of care packages to troops stationed abroad; and a series of fundraising events nationwide.  All these provide fans, club members, sponsors and the general public the opportunity to participate in charity golf tournaments and other activities that directly benefit military men and women and their families.
